Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine. The most common type of scoliosis is known as idiopathic, and occurs in teenage girls. Scoliosis typically takes form in a "C" or "S" shaped curve. In most cases, the cause of this curvature is unknown.
Progression of the curve is perhaps the worst thing about scoliosis. The spinal curve continues to become greater and greater, and in some cases a second compensatory curve develops- the body's attempt to relieve pressure on the spine. When left untreated in adolescent years, this progression could cause intense back pain and other complications in adulthood. In severe cases, the curved spine could put pressure on the heart and lungs, causing breathing problems. Fortunately, quite a few treatment options exist to prevent the worsening of this condition. Many can be done on adults as well as teens. Traditional techniques include bracing and surgery. Alternative methods include yoga, acupuncture, and chiropractic. This website explores all these options and more.
